The first month of the year is done, and this is usually the moment when things start to become clear. January is full of plans, goals, and confidence. Everyone is “ready”. February is when the business starts asking questions back.
In Dubai real estate, most agents don’t fail because the market is bad or because competition is high. They fail because they believe they have what it takes, without fully understanding what “having what it takes” actually means. There’s a big difference between closing a few deals and being able to perform consistently when nothing comes easily.
I’ve watched the same pattern repeat itself year after year. The first wins come in, people feel comfortable, and then the work changes. Calls matter more. Preparation matters more. Discipline matters more. That’s usually when the excuses start. The market is slow. Leads aren’t right. Other agents are unfair. Yet somehow, in every area, there’s always one agent still performing. Same conditions. Same market. Different standards. So why NOT you? I remember a period where I had one month of money left in my account and no real backup plan. That situation strips everything down. There’s no room for stories. You either take responsibility for every outcome, or you start looking for someone or something to blame. It changes how you work, how you prepare, and how seriously you take this business long after things improve.
I don’t believe in softening reality to make people comfortable. I believe in being clear. Experience doesn’t excuse cutting corners, and being new doesn’t excuse blaming the market. There will always be someone doing better than you, and the reason is rarely talent. It’s preparation, ownership, and consistency when nobody is watching. As the year goes on, the gap between those two mindsets will only grow. Some people will stay, put their head down, and do the work even when the excitement fades. Others will quietly move on, usually surprised that wanting something wasn’t enough.
January: Failing To Prepare Is Preparing To Fail
